Helping Working Families without Health Insurance

Phil Angelides finds it unconscionable that in the richest state in the wealthiest nation on earth, one out of every five Californians lives without health coverage. Over the last three years, health care premium costs have almost doubled for California employees. Of the uninsured, 80 percent are members of working families. Phil Angelides has outlined a five-point plan that he would take on the first day of his administration to expand affordable quality health care to working Californians, including children and seniors, who are uninsured or are struggling to afford coverage.

  1. Sponsor legislation to provide health insurance to all California children through the "Healthy Families" program.
  2. Sponsor legislation to require large corporations (200+ employees) to provide health care coverage to their workers and their families (similar to Senate Bill 2).
  3. Appoint new leadership at the Department of Managed Care that will crack down on HMOs so health care premiums are devoted to health care, not excessive profits and executive pay.
  4. Sponsor a real prescription drug benefit program that forces the drug companies to provide affordable prescription drugs to California families.
  5. Sponsor legislation that provides seniors and families the opportunity to purchase safe and legal prescription drugs at the best price via the Internet.
